These instructions show you how to get your Palace server template installed
for the UNIX platform.

Step 1. Uncompress the Palace Template Source File

The Palace Source Template File is distributed in tar.gz format. Run gunzip
to uncompress the tar image file.

    % gunzip <filename>

  For instance:

    % gunzip BeachResort_template.tar.gz

gzip/gunzip is the standard compression software used for distributing UNIX
software on the Internet. If you don't already have it, you can download
source code from <URL:ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu/> or any of the GNU
mirror sites. The current version is gzip-1.2.4.tar. Precompiled versions
are available from a number of places, including
  <URL:ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/unsupported/gnu/>.

Step 2. Extract the Palace Source Files

The preceding step produces a single file with the same name but without the
".gz" suffix. To extract the Palace source files, use tar with the extract
(-x) and the filename (-f) options. For example:

    % tar -xf BeachResort_template.tar

Step 3. Execute the Installation Script

The files extracted in the previous step will be decompressed into a directory
named for the given template. The files in this directory will include an
install script. This script, which varies slightly from UNIX to UNIX, installs
the Palace binaries, scripts and multimedia assets on your machine:

    % ./install

The installation script will ask you what to which directory you want to
install the Palace server template data.

Step 4. Point the Palace server to the new .pat file

The template data consists of new gif files and a new .pat file, in the
format <templatename>.pat file (for example, beach.pat). To use this new
template, use the 'roomsfile command to update your pserver.prefs file
  with this new .pat file.

  For example:

    'roomsfile "psdata/Beach.pat"

Step 5. Start the Palace server

Launch your Palace server. It launches with the new template look and feel.
  For example:

    % cd <YOUR_INSTALLATION_DIRECTORY>

    % cd bin

    % ./start

NOTE: use the ./start script only if your Palace web server isn't running, since it
starts both the Palace server and Palace web server. If your Palace web server is
already running, use ./start-palace instead.

That's It!

Your new Palace template will now be running. You can access your site by
using one of the Palace clients: The Palace User Software (Windows or
Macintosh), or the web-based Palace Viewer. For more information see the
